The Publication History of the Legion
(late 1950s - late 1980s)

This is by no means an exhaustive list of the appearances of the Legion but rather is put together in this way to provide an idea of which books could be considered the team's home for the first 30 years of its publication history

1958 - 1969

1971 - 1979 - starting with issue 197 the Legion is prominently featured on the cover but officially the title is still Superboy
Superboy - 10 appearances from 172 (Mar 71) to 195 (Jun 73)
Superboy 197 (Sep 73) - Legion become regulars in Superboy
Superboy 258 (Dec 79) - final issue of Superboy

1980 - 1984 - the numbering continues but the title changes, Superboy ceases to be a regular member of the Legion although he does return now and then, and he gets his own book The New Adventures of Superboy in January 1980
Legion of Super-Heroes 259 (Jan 80) - 313 (Jul 84)

1984 - 1987 - Once again the title changes but the numbering remains the same, for the first year the book continued to feature new stories, but after that it was all reprints
Tales of the Legion 314 (Aug 84) - 325 (Jul 85) - new stories
Tales of the Legion 326 (Aug 85) - 354 (Dec 87) - reprints of the direct market title

1984 - 1989 - A second Legion title begins, it is printed on higher quality "baxter" paper and only sold in comic shops (aka the direct market)

These two titles ran concurrently for one year after which Tales of the Legion just reprinted stories from the 1984 series

After a long break from the Legion, during which he was President of DC Comics (2002-2009), Levitz stepped down and stepped down and returned to writing the Legion of Super-Heroes soon thereafter

Earthwar

Superboy 241-245 - available on Comixology - epic story which included the introduction of Science Police Officer Shvaughn Erin and saw the Legion battle a number of villains on Weber's World including the Khunds, the Dark Circle, and Mordru


Legion Leaders - Leading up to the Great Darkness Saga the Legion had been lead by a number of legionnaires. Here is a chronological listing of the leaders of the Legion. Deputy leaders are listed in parentheses. The information comes from the letters page in Legion of Super-Heroes 288. Over 700 votes had been received from readers (by the time LSH 288 went to press) for the next election.

Dev-Em - survivor of Krypton, on Krypton he was Kal-El's babysitter; escaped Krypton thanks to Jor-El's warning and his own preparations, later left the 20th century and traveled to the 30th century where he joined the Interstellar Counterintelligence Corps; makes several more appearances in LSH, pre-CoIE but largely disappears after that

Heroes of Lallor - Beast Boy (deceased), Duplicate Boy, Evolvo Lad, Gas Girl, Life Lass

Originally known as the Legion of Super-Outlaws, they were good guys who where tricked into fighting the LSH, their powers come from their parents who were exposed to radiations (sounds like the X-Men), as a team they had three appearance prior to GDS, although Duplicate Boy had a few more appearances without the rest of the team and also had a romantic relationship with Shrinking Violet, the group had a few more appearances in LSH pre-CoIE (5) and a few more (4) afterwards

Wanderers - Celebrand, Psyche, Quantum Queen, Elvo, Dartalg, Ornitho, Immorto

A team of 30th Century adventurers who in their first appearance fought the LSH because they had been turned evil temporarily, they later got their own ongoing series in the late 1980s which lasted for 13 issues, but nothing since then

Legion of Substitute-Heroes - super-powered heroes who applied for membership in the LSH but were rejected; in this issues we see Polar Boy, Night Girl, Chlorophyll Kid, Fire Lad, Stone Boy

Weber's World - artificial planet built by the United Planets government, played a role in the Earthwar story arc (Superboy 241-245) also written by Paul Levitz, in which the Legion faces off against the Khunds, the Dark Circle, the Dominators, and Modru
